				Department of the Army
				General Orders No. 61 - 17 October 1955
Lieutenant Ludhik B. Zwolanski, VX Infantry, Australian Army,
a member of the 3d Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment,
distinguished himself by heroism in action against the enemy in
Korea, on 14 August 1952.  Lieutenant Zwolanski was leading
a platoon in an assault on a well-fortified enemy position.
Advancing toward its objective, the platoon encountered intense
enemy mortar fire and was forced to seek cover.  Determined
not to be thwarted by this adverse turn of events, with
disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Zwolanski left his
position of cover and moved forward in the face of the hail of
hostile fire, shouting words of encouragement to his men.
Inspired by this spontaneous display of courage and fortitude,
the platoon quickly rallied about him and resumed the attack
with renewed vigor and spirit, successfully reaching its
objective.  The confidence, resolute leadership, and
unyielding devotion to duty exhibited by Lieutenant Zwolanski
during this action reflect great credit on himself and the
				military service.

Beringer, Raymond (Bronze Star with V)

Luxembourg Army Corporal Raymond Beringer, serial number
L/310903, distinguished himself by selfless, heroic action while
serving as chief of a heavy machine gun team, heavy weapons
company, Belgian (B.U.N.C.) Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment,
3rd Infantry Division. The Belgian Battalion was deployed in
defensive positions along the "White Horse Mountain Line" east
of the village of Chatkol as the 3rd Infantry Division's far
right element adjacent to the Republic of Korea's 9th Infantry
Division. During the night of 7-8 April 1953, Chinese Communist
forces launched a bitter assault to penetrate the United
Nations' lines. Initial enemy successes swept back the forward
positioned outposts and threatened to break through the
battalion's right flank. On his own initiative and with complete
disregard for his personal safety, Corporal Beringer
				single-handedly relocated his heavy, water-cooled, .30 caliber
machine gun from the protected confines of his bunker to an
exposed position on top of it so as to have a better field of
fire. Despite heavy mortar and artillery shelling, which was
pinning down his fellow comrades, Corporal Beringer delivered
accurate and crippling fire for several hours into the waves of
assaulting Chinese troops, estimated to be of regimental
strength. His determination and coolness under fire blunted the
enemy attack and was crucial to the successful defense of the
battalion's exposed flank. Following the engagement upwards of
twenty dead and wounded enemy were found within 200 meters of
his bunker. At the time of this action Cpl Beringer was an
extended volunteer, his mandatory tour of duty having expired
three months earlier, when the Luxembourg contingent returned
				home.
In recognition of his heroic feat, he was cited in the
official Belgian dispatch of 22 April 1953 by his battalion
commander, and promoted to the rank of sergeant. His company
commander advised him that he was being recommended for a valor
decoration, and gave him the choice of an Belgian or American
award. He chose the latter, but apparently the paperwork never
reached US channels. The only US awards Cpl Beringer ever
received were the Korean Campaign Medal and the Combat Infantry
Badge. He served in Korea a total of 24 months, from 27 February
1952 to 25 February 1954. In August 1992, upon confirmation that
no official records existed in US Army files concerning his
recommendation for the Silver Star, he was presented a
"certificate" signed by Secretary of the Army Stone commending
his combat service in the Korean War.

				Department of the Army
				General Orders No. 35 - 13 May 1954
Gunner Peter Soanes, Royal Artillery, British Army, a member
of the 61st Light Regiment, distinguished himself by heroic
conduct in action against the enemy in Korea on 21 June 1952.
When a member of a sound ranging troop engaged in providing
communication facilities between the plotting center and
friendly artillery batteries, a hostile artillery barrage
abruptly severed the vital communication lines at several
points.  Realizing the adverse consequences that might be
engendered, Gunner Soanes immediately volunteered to repair the
damaged lines.  As he approached the area, enemy fire
increased in intensity.  Disregarding his personal safety,
he proceeded with skill and precision to fix the damaged lines.
Despite a wound received during this action, he remained in the
area until he had successfully restored the lines to operational
order, thereby enabling his unit to maximum combat effectiveness
against the foe.  The courage, determination of purpose,
and unwavering devotion to duty displayed by Gunner Soanes
throughout this action reflect great credit on himself and the
				military service.

				General Orders No. 35 - 13 May 1954
Sergeant Albert V. Wright, British Army, a member of the 5th
Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, distinguished himself by
heroic achievement in connection with military operations
against an enemy of the United Nations in Korea on 20 June 1952.
He was commanding a tank in a group situated on a small hill
when the enemy commenced a concentrated artillery barrage in an
effort to dislodge the tanks from their positions.  One
tank sustained a direct hit, setting it on fire and killing the
unit commander.  An ammunition dump near the tanks was
struck and set on fire.  Sergeant Wright, disregarding the
danger of exploding ammunition, rushed to the stricken vehicle,
climbed into the turret, directed the tank to a safer position,
and successfully extinguished the flames, thereby preventing
irreparable damage to the tank.  He then returned to his
own tank and proceeded to effectively engage the enemy.
Sergeant Wright's prompt and courageous actions undoubtedly
saved a valuable piece of equipment and reflect great credit on
				himself and the British Army.

Major General Kim Yong Bae, Commanding General, Republic of

initiating the attack, encountered withering mortar and
artillery fire from a numerically superior, well-fortified
hostile force.  Disregarding his safety and braving intense
enemy fire, General Kim moved to the forward observation post
and for several hours directed and coordinated supporting action
against the enemy.  Rallying to the challenge of their
valiant leader, the resolute troops fought with great courage
and skill and had almost secured their objective when a fierce
enemy counterattack repulsed the assault, retook the hill
position, and inflicted numerous friendly casualties.  With
unflinching courage, General Kim left his outpost position and
constantly exposed to enemy fire, moved among the troops,
steadying and encouraging them by his inspiring example.
Eventually recognizing that the mission was imperiled by
overwhelming odds, he directed a spectacular, strategic
withdrawal, which resulted in the saving of many lives.
His presence in the forward area provided a strong, steadying
